10 Tips for Stress-Free Seasonal Decor Storage 

When the holidays approach, you may love the thought of decorating. However, it’s a hassle if your seasonal decor is a jumble of tangled lights, broken ornaments, and unidentifiable boxes. Use these simple tips to keep your holiday decorations organized and stress-free. 

1. Get Rid of Cardboard Boxes 

Don’t store items in cardboard boxes. The cardboard absorbs moisture, leading to mold and odors. Over time, the boxes also break down, compromising their ability to protect your items. 

Instead, use watertight plastic containers with lids. If you’re storing fabric items, toss a few cedar blocks or rings inside the bin to help protect against moths and other pests. Regularly replace the cedar or sand it to refresh it. 

2. Use Labels to Make Life Easier 

You might think you’ll remember where everything is as you put it away. However, when you pull it all out a year later, the odds are good you won’t remember what’s inside which container. 

Label everything to make it easy to locate items and put things back in their proper place. Even if you use clear containers, labels are still helpful. Many things are toward the center of the bin, surrounded by other stuff. 

3. Don’t Organize by Item, Organize by Holiday 

It may seem logical to store all of your vases in one box and statues in another. However, when it comes to holiday decorations, store your decor by holiday. 

You don’t want to wade through a bunch of containers to find all of your various Thanksgiving or Christmas decor. Organizing a holiday makes it easier to grab the exact bins you need when it’s time to decorate, without dealing with a bunch of extra stuff. 

4. Wrap Your String Lights 

Resist the urge to toss all of your string lights into a bin and call it a day. Sure, it only takes a few seconds, so it’s tempting. But your future self will spend hours grumbling as they try to untangle the ball of wire. 

Wrap the lights around a piece of cardboard, or keep the inserts that come with many string lights. (If you do use cardboard, be ready to replace it if it starts to look worn down.) Tuck the end of the cord to keep the strand in place and lay it in the container. 

5. Don’t Forget to Take Out Batteries 

If you have any holiday decor with batteries, remove the batteries before storing the items. Otherwise, the batteries can corrode when exposed to intense temperatures and other conditions, ruining the item. 

6. Store Upcoming Holiday Items at the Front 

Rotate your seasonal storage so that the upcoming holiday is at the front. When you put it away after the holiday ends, stow it to the back and bump everything up a notch. 

This rotation system means the next holiday is always toward the front of your storage area. This way you don’t have to go digging out boxes and bins from the back of your garage, basement, or attic. 

7. Declutter Decor as You Decorate 

Each holiday, as you put out your decorations, decide which ones are ready to go. Toss broken items, donate things in good condition to others, and use the opportunity to declutter. 

When you pack everything away at the end of the holiday, do another pass. (Especially if you picked up a few new decorations during the season.) 

8. Make Sure to Wrap Fragile Items 

Many people assume since their holiday decorations sit untouched in storage most of the year, there’s no need to wrap items. However, things have a tendency to shift. 

Plus, sometimes you move things around to reach other boxes throughout the year. Therefore, always wrap your delicate decor pieces with bubble wrap or newspaper to protect them. 

9. Hang Your Wreaths 

If you have vertical storage space, use it to hang your holiday wreaths and keep them in shape. Add an extra layer of protection from dust and other elements by covering them with garment bags (not the cheap plastic ones from the dry cleaners). 

10. Keep Wrapping Supplies Accessible 

Don’t store your wrapping supplies with your seasonal decorations. Many times, people start wrapping gifts long before they start decorating for Christmas or other gift-giving holidays.  

Therefore, have a separate container for your wrapping supplies that is easy to get to. Then, you don’t have to stress when it’s time to wrap that Secret Santa gift.
