No-Demo Renovations to Transform Your Home

Ask anyone who loves to binge-watch HGTV and you’ll likely hear that you need to knock down walls and tear out cabinets to renovate. However, there are plenty of no-demo renovations that can transform your house.

A recent HGTV favorite is Jennifer Todryk’s No-Demo Reno, showcasing ways to make over your house without a sledgehammer. Of course, sometimes, the occasional demolition may be inevitable, but it isn’t necessary in every redesign.

If you’re ready to give your house a new look, start with these no-demo tips to transform your home.

  1. Change Your Color Palette

Reimagine your home’s color palette with new paint and accessories. Changing the colors throughout your house gives it an entirely new look and feel. A new coat of paint on the walls also freshens up your space and makes it look new.

  1. Upgrade the Lighting

Swap out light fixtures for ones that make a statement. Change bulbs so that all of them are the same color and temperature (or use smart bulbs). Add dimmers to make it easier to adjust your lighting and set the mood in different rooms.

Layer in lighting with sconces, under-cabinet lights, and lamps. If you don’t want to pay an electrician to hardwire new fixtures, shop for wireless, battery-operated options. Or look for ones that plug into an outlet and use cord covers to mask the wires (or if it’s a single cord, paint it to blend into the wall).

  1. Layer Window Treatments

If your current window treatments are basic blinds and shades or a simple set of curtains, it’s time to give them an overhaul. Window coverings offer form and function, blocking light, providing privacy, and creating a stylish moment.

Add a set of curtains over the blinds or pair a new set of drapes with a light set of sheers. Move curtain rods higher, within one to two inches from the ceiling, to make rooms appear taller. You can do so much with window treatments, no demo required.

  1. Replace Cabinet Doors

Get the look of new cabinets by changing the doors instead of the entire cabinet boxes. This way, there’s no need to rip anything out. You’re just swapping the old doors for something newer and more in keeping with your new design.

If new cabinet doors aren’t in the budget, a fresh coat of paint or a new stain on the existing ones also makes a big difference. Of course, both of these suggestions assume your current cabinet boxes are in good condition.

  1. Get New Plumbing Fixtures

Give your kitchen and bathrooms an instant lift with new plumbing fixtures. Replacing an old, crusty faucet with a brand-new one makes a huge difference. It’s also a fairly easy DIY project.

However, if you’re planning to replace all of your fixtures, it could be worth hiring a plumber depending on your comfort level with your skills. You’ll likely definitely want a plumber to change out bathtub faucets, drains, and more involved projects (unless you’re skilled in these areas).

  1. Makeover Existing Furniture

Transform your home without demolition by giving your furniture a new look. You don’t need to buy a bunch of new stuff. Instead, change the things you have.

If your existing furniture is in great shape, and you love the shape and comfort of it, give it a few cosmetic changes to make your space look new. Use slipcovers, paint items, recover chair cushions, etc.

  1. Install Crown Molding

Adding crown molding around the perimeter of a room elevates the space and gives it a more sophisticated, luxurious feel. And, depending on the size of your space, it only costs about $150 to $300.

You can choose from all sorts of styles of molding. There are various shapes and sizes, and you can paint it any color you desire.

  1. Change Cabinet Hardware

Upgrade your cabinet and drawer knobs and pulls to give spaces a new look. It’s like adding or changing your jewelry to enhance your usual outfit.

It’s a simple, small tweak, but it has a big impact. Look for pieces that have the same hole placement as your current pulls to make this change super simple.

  1. Install a Dramatic Backsplash

Whether in your kitchen, bathroom or anywhere else, if you want to create a statement, tile is a great way to do it. A backsplash can be a simple or involved DIY project, depending on the design, tile size, and your skill level.

If your idea is very detailed, you may benefit from using a professional. However, no matter how you choose to create your tile masterpiece, you won’t need to rip out walls to do it.

  1. Regrout Existing Tiles

If laying new tile or putting in a new backsplash isn’t in the cards, consider regrouting your existing tile. If your grout is getting dingy or cracking, it looks bad, plus it compromises the tiles and walls behind them.

Cracks in grout allow moisture and humidity to seep behind the tiles, loosening them and opening the door for mildew and mold. Therefore, remove the old grout and add the new. It’s relatively easy, but it’s tedious, so decide if you want to hire someone or do it yourself.
